In order to discuss the developing tendencies of FGM, the concept and the development background of functionally graded materials are introduced, the research progress in preparation methods, property evaluation and applications of FGM are discussed and the prospects of FGM are presented. Furthermore, it is pointed out that novel researches of FGM are most of theoretical research, lack of experiment , the continuous perfection of fabricating techniques FGM researches should start from ground work and incorporate with other applying techniques so that material design, material preparation, properties measurement can be perfectly merged together.
