How do people represent and process cyclical time? This is a interesting issue in the domain of time cognition. Up to now, many models have emerged, such as the Image-Word List Model advanced by Freedman. But a lot of researches have proved that the representation and processing strategies of cyclical time were affected by language and culture. A special temporal expression style in Cantonese is five minutes as " a character". Does this kind of language expressions affect the cyclical temporal reasoning of Cantonese speakers? This study compared the differences in cyclical temporal reasoning between Cantonese-Mandarin diglossic speakers and Mandarin speakers. Experiments 1 and 2 examined the subjects' cyclical temporal reasoning about the materials of "not to five as a unit," "5 as a unit" and "character as a unit". Experiments 3 and 4 further investigated the subjects' cyclical temporal reasoning for different materials using the two-task paradigm. In the paradigm of two tasks, the primary task was cyclical temporal reasoning; the secondary task was odd-even number judging or picture judging. Experiments 1 and 2 showed that whether the materials is "not to five as a unit," "5 as a unit" or "character as a unit," the reaction time of Cantonese-Mandarin diglossiac speakers was longer than Mandarin speakers. Experiments 3 and 4 indicated that when the time materials were "5 as a unit", the reaction time of the Cantonese-Mandarin diglossic speakers and Mandarin speakers were affected strongly by the odd even number judging secondary task, and when the time materials were "' character' as a unit", the Cantonese-Mandarin diglossic speakers were affected strongly by the picture judging secondary task. This results implied that both Cantonese-Mandarin diglossic speakers and Mandarin speakers adopted number processing in time reasoning when the materials were "5 as a unit", but to the materials of "' eharacter' as a unit", Cantonese-Mandarin diglossic speakers
