Pulse oximetry is a widely used technology for the non-invasive, real-time and continuous measurement of blood oxygen saturation, which is an important physiological parameter used in clinical diagnosis and home healthcare. Nevertheless, measurement precision of the current pulse oximeters varies from situations to situations. This papers reviews the principles of pulse oximetry and discusses external and internal factors that influence the measurement precision. The study will help to further develop the technology such that it can be used in a variety of dynamic situations.
