Wangzhai river is located in the Guiding Ecological Reserve for the wild population of Andrias davidianus, Guiding, Guizhou province. The species and density of pelagic algae were surveyed at 6 sampling sites in Autumn, 2007and Spring, 2008, and the water quality in the river was also evaluated according to both the Margalef and Shannon-wiener indices of algae. Totally 83 species of pelagic algae were found in Wangzhai river in Spring, and in autumn, 66 species. Most of these species are diatom, accounting for 65% of total species in spring and 70% in autumn. The density of pelagic algae ranged from 2.83 × 10^5 ind./L to 6.92 × 10^5 ind./L, with an average of 5.34 × 10^5 ind./L, in spring. In autumn, the range and average were 4.5 × 10^4 - 1.8 × 10^5 ind./L and 9. 908 × 10^4 ind./L, respectively. Margalef index ranged from 3.06 to 5.90 with an average of 4.56 in spring, and from 2.31 to 6.63 with an average of 4.10 in autumn. Shannon-wiener index ranged from 3.57 to d. 16 with an average of 3.89 in spring and from 2.79 to 4.54 with an average of 3.52 in autumn. In general, the water in the river is clean and suitable to the wild population of Andrias davidianus in the reserve.
