Milbemycins, a series of 16-membered macrocyclic lactones, can be produced by several species of Streptomyces. They display strong insecticidal, acaricidal and other biological activities. Since the first milbemycin compound was found in 1967, a lot of its analogues have been reported. Several drugs, widely used as veterinary drugs or pesticides for crop production, have been developed and commercialized from milbemycins. The research advances in the producing microorganisms, physico-chemical properties, biological activities and applications of milbemycins are mainly reviewed.
