The research examined the role of spatial iconicity in semantic relatedness judgment. The subjects made speeded decisions of whether the members of a simultaneously presented word pair were semantically relatect. The words were presented vertically or horizontally, either in an iconic relation with their referents or in a reverse iconic relation. Experiment 1 ,in which words denoting substantive obiects were used as the stimulus, indicated the reverse-iconic condition yielded significantly slower semantic-relatedness judgments than did the iconic condition. Experiment 2, in which words denoting parts of larger objects were used as the stimuli, found that the vertical iconic condition facilitated semantic-relatedness judgments. The current findings showed that the similarity between the spatial arrangement of words and that of their referents affected semantic judgments, which supported the perceptual symbol systtem .
