Courtyard is one of the traditional residential forms in China. As the representation of traditional courtyard space, Jinzhong courtyard shows distinct local characteristics in the shape, layout and style of composition as a result of multi-effect form commercial culture and defense consciousness ,etc. This paper, based on the information of field survey, analyzes the specific forms of elements and determinative function of kindred parts such as the wall and the door. It demonstrates that the traditional courtyard residence not only meets the basic functional requirements, but also is a reflection of geographical conditions, social ideology, ethnics, and so on.
