This paper carried out the investigation and research of discipline development with Zhejiang University of Technology （ZUT） as an example to reveal the general rule of discipline growth. The investigation shows that ZUT is in the formation phase for most disciplines, the degree of organization is not high, the ability of social services is not strong and discipline leader training should be strengthened. An analysis of the factors influencing discipline growth has bee made and corresponding building strategies put forward.
