Hybrid current limiting and breaking technology is formed from several technologies such as high speed mechanical switch, solid state switch, fast fuse, superconducting current limiter and liquid metal current limiter. Hybrid current limiting and breaking technology has advantages owned by each individual technology and avoids their disadvantages. Therefore it has wide application prospect. The paper presents principle and developing status of hybrid current limiting breakers, hybrid current limiting fuses, hybrid superconducting current limiter and hybrid liquid metal current limiter in detail and gives a comparison between different topologies. Advantages and disadvantages of main kinds of hybrid current limiting and breaking technologies are also surveyed. Key research points for future hybrid current limiting and breaking technology are summarized.
