Rhodamine 6 G hydrazide ( R 6 GH) was developed as a fluorescent p robe for the specific detection of Hg2+. The presence of Hg2+ can induced an enhanced fluorescence response at 554 nm accompanied by a naked-eye visible fluorescent color change from colorless to bright yellowish-green. Other metal ions including heavy and transition metal ions have no effect on the response of R 6 GH to Hg2+. The probe has been used for imaging of Hg2+ within living Hela cells with satisfying results. In addition,R6 GH can selectively sense Hg2+ by a color change from colorless to pink.
