英文摘要：

Based on an analysis of the fundamental meanings of urban design, this paper reveals the intrinsic problems during the rapid process of Chinese urbanization, and elaborates on the irreplaceable professional role of urban design in shaping amiable urban human environment. It summarizes four paradigms of urban design in history, and generalizes common types of projects and status of architects in urban design activities in China. Compared with planners, architects are supposed to be more artistically imaginative and creative while tackling the organization of urban space and place-making, especially in conceptual and project-oriented urban design projects. It concludes with suggestions of five key points for Chinese architects＇ involvement in urban design.
