In 2007, a brick - chambered tomb of the Northern Qi Dynasty was excavated in Anyang, Henan Province, and its owner was Liu Tong, alias Liu Shagui. The epitaph recorded Liu Tong's official experience and major achievements. By comparing the epitaph with relevant historical data, it is found that, Liu Tong was exactly the famous painter Liu Shagui in the Northern Qi Dynasty, and this was the only tomb discovered so far of a Northern Qi painter. After a detailed interpretation of the epitaph, reference to relevant literature, and analysis of the wall paintings of the tomb, we began to have a basic understanding of the Northern Qi Dynasty painting. The painting of the Northern Qi Dynasty reached its heyday after the reign of the first em- peror. The major motifs for the paintings were pommel horse travel, ceremonies, flowers and birds, and the paintings conformed to realism. In the Northern Qi Dynasty, only the nobility and be buried in a tomb with large wall paintings; the tomb wall paintings were probably created by special royal painters and the themes and content of different tomb paintings were basically the same.
