The paper was focused on the urban area of Urumqi and analyzed the contents, distribution and influence mechanisms of the heavy metals in urban soils. Heavy mentals of chromium, copper, plumbum, zinc, manganese and iron were mainly studied. The experiments were carried out by means of atomic absorption flame spectro- photometry, and HNO3 - HF - HCIO4 was used for pre-treatment of samples. The following conclusions can be drawn that Cr,Cu,Pb and Zn have higher contents which have gone beyond background value by 1.65 -2.84 times except for Mn and Fe. Spatial distribution of Cr,Cu,Zn and Pb has obvious character except for Mn and Fe. Cr,Pb of higher contents are distributed along the main northwest - southeast traffic line. This kind of distribution is related with heavy traffic, industry distribution, wind direction and landform; Cu ,Zn of higher contents are distributed in north area of the city and industry distribution may be the main reason; there are Cu,Pb and Zn of higher contents in central downtown district because of heavy traffic, high strength activity coming from human being, less cover of vegetation. Industrial pollution, parent soil materials loading and transport pollution were the main sources of the heavy metals in soils in Urumqi.
