A number of tree-ring based climate reconstructions have been published recently, highlighting the necessity of reviewing some general methods used in dendrochronology. Due to the segment length curse, tree- ring researchers are restricted to extraction of low-frequency climate signals from tree rings. The regional curve standardization (RCS) method has been widely used recently because of its special ability in retaining the low- frequency climate variability. However, recent studies have also advised cautions on the use of this method as it may lead to biased climate signals. It is here suggested that the "signal-free" standardization methods be used since they have been documented to alleviate the shortcomings of the RCS method.
