Through a historical review of the vicissitudes of gated cities, neighborhoods and residential compounds in China with related physical evolution and social change, this paper reveals the origins of the enclosed spatial forms and the context in which the organizational patterns of gated communities are deeply ingrained. It also explores the emergence and development trajectory of gated communities in China, providing a local narrative and a contextual framework for discourse analysis to complicate the understanding of Chinese gated communities.
