From the perspective of urban design control, this paper investigates the possibilities to reduce negative impacts of gated communities, directly or indirectly, through effective planning policies or design strategies.Based on an analysis of enclosure scale, edge effect and shared facilities of an enclave,it argues the necessity and feasibility to apply design control in gated communities for the sake of development, management and maintenance. It suggests several crucial elements of design and how they can be applied to merge gated communities in an urban fabric.
