A hybrid membrane of silk fibroin/SiO2 (SF/SiO2) was prepared to renain the partially purified potato polyphenol oxidase (PPO) for removing a phenolic compound from the test solution. The hybrid membrane was less water soluble than the SF membrane. The optimum pH of immobilized PPO was about 7.4. This immobilized PPO exhibited a higher thermal stability, and it was more stable and more effective for continuous use than the free PPO. The SF/SiOz membrane with immobilized PPO was reusable after regeneration by water rinsing and thus may be cost effective for removing phenolic compounds from industrial wastewaters.
