Da Guang Yi Hui Yu Pian （《大广益会玉篇》 ）, also called The Enlarged-Edition Yupian （ 广益本《玉篇》 ）, is an important official dictionary revised by Song Dynasty, which plays a significant role in the history of dictionary compilation in China. It has an impressive collection of a great number of characters with questionable forms, sounds, meanings and unknown origins. Based on the theories of philology, exegetics, phonology, textual criticism and lexicology and referring to the laws of character change through vernacular usage and their specific usage in literature, the paper examines 13 difficult characters from the aspects of their forms, sounds and meanings after comprehensive and systematic study of Yupian.
