A university president, as the university soul, should be of a rational authoritative structure so as to lead and manage the university. The structure is a unity of four types of authority, namely, personality authority, academic authority, post authority and administrative authority. A university president with such a rational authoritative structure should follow four principles, a unity of knowledge, ability and quality, mutual balance among emotion, reason and law, taking people first, and a harmonious unity of truth, goodness and beauty. A university president should avoid an irrational authoritative structure-either lacking or abusing a certain kind of authority.
