A poly (vinyl chloride) (PVC) membrane electrode based on an aluminum-phthalocyanine (A1Pc) complex as a neutral carrier with unique selectivity to nitrite ion (NO2^-) was prepared. The proposed electrode was shown to exhibit anti-Hofmeister selectivity behavior and a near-Nernst potential response to NO2^- over a linear range of 1.0×10^-1~1.5×10^-6 mol·L^-1 with a detection limit of 9.5×10^-7 mol·L^-1 and a slope of -58. 3±0.5 mV per decade. This electrode was applied, as an indicator electrode in the direct potentiometric method, to the determination of nitrite in wastewater, and satisfactory results were obtained.
