The inertial navigation system (INS) aided with GPS has shown its advantages in various fields of application, which will lead to a great demand for extremely low-cost sensors. The prospects and development of inertial sensor technology are discussed, based on its application and research. The near- and long-term application of inertial sensors is presented in this paper, such as fiber-optic gyros, micro-mechanical gyros and accelerometers, and micro-optical sensors. Micromechanical sensors and improved fiber-optic gyros are expected to change many of current navigation technologies.
