Twenty-two subjects were presented with figures of battery sets consisting of four batteries different in shape and stripes. The subjects were asked to indicate what kind of batteries could produce electricity. The results indicated that if the charged batteries shared some features, the subjects could detect this shared feature quickly and make a general conclusion. On the contrary, if the charged batteries did not share a feature, the subjects would respond slowly. If the shared feature was stripe, the subjects would respond more quickly in the'shared-but-interference-free condition than the shared-but-with-interference condition, and manifested the process of hypothesis forming and testing. The reaction time was longer if the shared feature was shape. This suggested that subjects often applied a global precedence strategy.
