Lectures on Jurisprudence is lecture notes that include two separate lectures of Adam Smith as Professor of Moral Philosophy at the Glasgow University between 1752 and 1764. It covered the disciplines that we now recognize as philosophy, theology, law, politics and economics. In this master- piece, Smith puts the abstract human nature issue into the specific historical development process. He systematically summarized and reviewed the theory of natural rights which developed by Grotius, Pufen- dorf, Locke, Hume and other scholars of Scottish Enlightenment, thus opened up a new paradigm for understanding and thinking about the state and society. Therefore, more in--depth study on the Lectures on Jurisprudence will undoubtedly help us to get the core of Smith's legal thought and to understand the origin of his thought of natural rights. Meanwhile, this book also help us to complete and to reinforce many argumentations of The Wealth of Nations, because it allow us to see that Smith always put his in- quiry into the nature and causes by taking the wealth of nations as embededness in a wider theoretical framework about social and political development.
