Cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) have some perfect properties, and the application of the modified CNC in functional materials has been a research focus. It stated the modification methods of CNC, including substitution with small molecules and different coupling agents, modification based on the "graft from" strategy with the radical polymerization of ring opening polymerization, Atom transfer radical polymerization and reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer polymerization, adsorption modifications and some special chemical modifications. Research progresses in application of CNC in functional materials, such as biological drugs, polymer electrolytes, bio-inspired mechanically adaptive nanomaterials and so on.
