The influence of polar gaps on gravity field recovery from GOCE data is discussed with spherical harmonic analysis by combining the algorithms of invariants. Firstly the formulas to show the influence of polar gaps on recovery of the gravity field are derived, And then some simulations are given in order to analyze the magnitude and prosperity of the influence, The results show that different degrees will influence each other due to the destruction of orthogonality, especially on low orders. In order to reduce the influence of the polar gap, the method of remove-restore is introduced, Although the different results can be led by using the different reference models to remove-restore, the accuracy of the geoid in the region far from the polar gap is still mainly dominated by the accuracy of observation.
