The effect of waste steelmaking slag, supplied by Iron and Steel Enterprise, on the growth of Heterosigma akashiwo-a typic species of red-tide forming marine microalgae was studied and the feasibility of waste steelmaking slag as "iron fertilization" was discussed. Heterosigma akashiwo was stimulated under the lower concentration of steelmaking slag while inhibited under the higher concentration. The growth ofHeterosigma akashiwo, which stimulated by steelmaking slag, was more significant in ocean water with the addition of nutrients (no trace elements) than in coastal water under the same condition. Microalgae biomass was significantly increased compared to the control group when the steelmaking slag concentration was about 248mg/L in ocean water and 62mg/L in coastal water.
