How to reduce the weight of existing materials and structures without compromising their mechanical properties has been a challenge in front of materials scientists and mechanists.This article presents a comprehensive review on various processing techniques for a novel type of ultralightweight material - periodic lattice metallic materials - and on the key welding technique for fabricating high-performance sandwich panels with these cellular materials as the core.Based on our own researches,various hardening techniques are discussed for enhancing the mechanical properties of lattice metallic materials.
