Foreign language education, with its orientation toward humanistic values being deviated due to continuous sub- divisions of knowledge genealogy and changes of social demands, has been confronted with a spiritual loss, in which its in- strumental attribute has outweighed its humanistic attribute. In recent years, the national economic and social developments have impelled a greater call for the enhancement of citizens＇ qualities, morals, and ethical conducts, and this has brought an on-going agitation that disturbs Chinese higher education. To reinvigorate its spiritual foundation, foreign language uni- versities should invite its own humanistic values from within and open general courses on humanity, whereupon appropriate course arrangements and according institutional sustainment becomes a vital channel for effective implementation of human- istic and general education.
