From the perspective of cognitive construction grammar, this paper explores two as- pects concerning the ＂xiu （秀） ＂ structure in Chinese： its constructional attribute and cognitive moti- vation of emergence. The study shows that ＂xiu＂ structures are schematic constructions with speci- fied meaning and they are motivated by four factors, namely, coercion of constructional meaning, drive of sequential scanning, initiation of analogy and requirement of cognitive economy.
