The research and development history of nanowires are reviewed,the new characteristics and advantages of the nanowires applied in the new generation solar cells are summarized.The development of fabrication methods of silicon based nanowires applied in solar cells and the electrical characteristics and unique anti-reflectance property of nanowires as a new kind of one dimensional planar structures are introduced.The research status and latest progress of the silicon based nanowire array applied in solar cells are emphatically introduced,and the problems in the past research and the future research emphasis are pointed out.With the specific mechanism of carrier separation and the notable anti-reflectance character,silicon nanowires have great potential in improving the efficiency and reducing the cost of silicon based solar cells,and occupy an important position in the research field of solar cells.The investigation of nanowire solar cells will be a focus in the future.
