There has been steadily growing evidence in the participation of trace elements in multiple physiological and biochemical processes, such as consisting of active enzyme, synthesis of hormone and vitamin, electron transportation. Additionally, Alzheimer's disease is characterized by disturbance of trace elements in the brain. This review summarizes studies which implicate a role for trace elements in contributing to AD, especially in the aspect of neuronal metabolism, oxidative stress, Ab deposition, and synaptic transmission.
