The definition of Jian in Shuowen（China＇s Words and their Stories）is not the original meaning.Based on the analysis of ancient Chinese dictionaries,the author of this paper holds that the Chinese character ＂Jian ＂has its implied meaning. ＂Jian＂originally means the small-long-narrow bamboo slip used in writing and then came to mean officialese.Because of being used as a title of explanations of words in ancient books by Zhengxuan,＂Jian＂came to have its annotation.
