To promote voluntary shift to more sustainable urban transport, this paper studies the modal choice behavior from a social psychological perspective, with constructs of social norm. A path model is proposed considering impacts of three different kinds of social norms on travel modal choice behavior, and is calibrated with survey data from Shanghai, China. It demonstrates that subjective norm and personal norm influence public transport use intention and further the actual deeds, while descriptive norm influence public transport usage both directly and indirectly, via public transport use intention and private car ownership. Individual car ownership is jointly influenced by income and descriptive norm.
