This paper describes the development history of spatial structures and classifies spatial structures into ancient spatial structures, modern spatial structures and contemporary spatial structures according to the development characteristic, types of form and the state of science and technology of spatial structures in all periods, points out factors that boost the development of spatial structures. The composing and classification of rigid spatial structures, flexible spatial structures and rigid-flexible combined spatial structures are presented and discussed. 38 types of spatial structures which have been applied in practical engineering are classified based on element composing, and the classification figure of spatial structures on the basis of element composing is clear and suitable.
