The voltage-gated calcium channels （VGCCs） are a large and functionally diverse group of ion channels found throughout the central nervous system （CNS） and periphery. Neuronal functions include the control of neurotransmitter release, action-potential firing and neuronal excitability in important pain pathways. In this review we will give an overview of the data that has been generated in support of these channels performing a key role in the pain pathway.
