Phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase/serine-threonine kinase (PI3K/Akt) is a kind of kinases which specifically catalyzes phosphatidylinositol. PI3K/Akt signaling pathway is one of the most important signaling pathways in cells and it is implicated in a broad spectrum of cell metabolism in animals. This review summarized characteristics and activation mechanism of PI3 K/Akt signaling pathway, and discussed the regulation mechanisms in cell apoptosis and muscle growth and development.
