The cytomembrane is a critical cellular structure.Every change of cellular function is related to the cytomembrane. In order to explore the effects of SO2 on the cytomembrane, the membrane fluidity and the enzyme activities of rat erythrocytes exposed to SO2 were measured. After exposure to SO2,the cytomembrane fluidity of the rat erythrocytes decreased but the level of lipid peroxidation was enhanced. The activities of superoxide dismutase(SOD)、Na^+,K^+-ATPase and Ca^2+,Mg^2+-ATPase associated with the cytomembrane decreased while the lactate dehydrogenase(LDH) activity in the membrane increased. The results suggest that the components and functions of the plasma membrane were changed and the permeability of the plasma membrane was increased for the rats exposed to SO2.The primary damage resulting from exposure to SO2 was injury to the structure and function of the cytomembrane.
