In modern China, Zhang Taiyan, master of Chinese study, advocated the concept of general literature which was different from other scholars at that time, and was criticized frequently. However, this literature concept is closely related with Zhang＇s unique idea of literature modernity. Therefore, it is necessary to rationally analyze his concept of general literature which helps better understand discourse practice in his literature.
