type of unsymmetrical shadow mask plasma display panel(SMPDP) has been successfully developed. The major difference from the conventional SMPDP is that the symmetrical axis of the rear opening in each cell deviates from that of the front opening. A 4-inch prototypical unsymmetrical SMPDP was fabricated and its discharge performance was studied. After optimizing the scan electrode, several advantages over the conventional SMPDP, such as its discharge intensity, its static margin addressing speed and its luminous efficacy, were realized.
