Three-dimensional fluid model and the aging system are used to investigate the characteristics of three-electrode shadow mask plasma display panel (PDP) cell in two types of driving waveforms. The simulation results indicate that the firing and sustaining voltages driven by opposite-discharge waveforms are lower than those driven by surface-discharge waveforms. The simulation results also show that the peak discharge intensity driven by opposite-discharge waveforms is 89% higher than that driven by surface-discharge waveforms, while the discharge efficiency driven by surface-discharge waveforms is 9. 1% higher than that driven by opposite-discharge waveforms. The luminance and luminous efficiency tested in experimental panel show the same variations with the simulation results.
