From the mid-1970s, some historians, commentators and free-lance writers of national conservatism orientations began to publicize works aiming at re-explaining German history, especially history of the Nazi Regime and the Second World War. Based on a new perception that is ' freed from the burden of history' , these authors tried to ' historicize' Nazism, to 'relativize' the crimes committed by the Nazis, and to construct a national identity of ' self-consciousness' , thus facilitating Germany's return to the status as a traditional great power. Although the Historical Revisionism of the Neo-Right is just a ' countercurrent' in the political culture of the Federal Republic of Germany, it does have a profound historical and social background. Therefore, it deserves our attention and must be seriously criticized.
