Objective To investigate the microbiological indicators of direct drinking water and tap water of student dormitories in a university. Methods A total of 120 samples, including 60 samples of direct drinking water and 60 samples of tap water, were collected from 12 student dorm buildings of a university in July, 2015. The bacterial colony was counted with the plate count method, and the coliforms were detected with the lactose peptone culture method. All the results were analyzed statistically. Results The percent of pass of direct drinking water was 98.33%( 59/60) while tap water was 95.00%( 57/60), and the difference between them was not statistically significant(χ2= 1.0258, P 〉0.25). The average aerobic bacterial count of direct drinking water was 19.69±3.20 while the tap water was 20.78 ± 4.49, and the difference between them was not statistically significant(t=1.5313, P〉0.1). The differences of aerobic bacterial counts between the direct drinking water and tap water in North Campus and Zhiyuan g/Garden were not statistically significant(t =1.1283, P 0.2; t = 1.3891, P 〉0.1) but the aerobic bacterial count of tap water was more than that of direct drinking water in South Campus(t = 7.3489, P 〈0.001).The differences of aerobic bacterial counts of direct drinking water among 3 campus were not statistically significant(F=3.6947, P 〉0.051) but the aerobic bacterial count of tap water in South Campus was highest than that in the others(F=9.3618, P〈0.05). The coliform was not found in both direct drinking water and tap water. Conclusion The microbiological indicators of both direct drinking water and tap water in the student dormitories of the university are met the criterion of GB5749-2006 hygienic standard for drinking water.
