Encouraging Learning is a masterpiece written respectively by Xunzi, Fukuzawa Yukichi and Zhang Zhidong, whose outlook on learning is similarly concerned with the necessities, targets and methods of learning. However, there are some disparities: Xunzi puts an emphasis on cultivating the ideal personality as a Saint, which focuses on learning traditional classics; Fukuzawa Yukichi highlights cultivating independent personality, which is concerned with spreading bourgeois democracy and freedom; Zhang Zhidong emphasizes internally learning traditional Chinese knowledge, the basis, to cultivate oneself and externally learning western knowledge, the practice, to reform the society.
