Encouraging Learning is a masterpiece written respectively by Xunzi, Fukuzawa Yukichi and Zhang Zhidong, whose outlook on learning is similarly concerned with the necessities, targets and methods of learning. However, there are some disparities： Xunzi puts an emphasis on cultivating the ideal personality as a Saint, which focuses on learning traditional classics; Fukuzawa Yukichi highlights cultivating independent personality, which is concerned with spreading bourgeois democracy and freedom; Zhang Zhidong emphasizes internally learning traditional Chinese knowledge, the basis, to cultivate oneself and externally learning western knowledge, the practice, to reform the society.
