Nitrogen is an important nutrient for plant growth, but the exogenous inorganic nitrogen must be assimilated into organic nitrogen which can be absorbed by higher plants. Glutamine synthetase （GS） is the key enzyme involved in the process of nitrogen assimilation. In this article, the types, function, physicochemical and molecular bioloay properties and the gene expression of GS were summarized.
