This paper reviews some of what is known about ion transport through cells of the mammalian stria vascularis, and how the endolymph and endocochlear potentials are produced. It describes the roles of eaeh ion transport proteins in detail, circulation of K^+, Cl^- and electrolytes, and water balance in the stria vascularis, as well as the underlying mechanisms.
