A united information system (UIS) in the power grid is presented as the necessary information processing infrastructure to realizing the smart grid. The UIS is built on network-interconnected server computers distributed over the entire power grid, combined with the distributed and hierarchical control and management structure in the power grid, and provides information processing services for the whole power grid. A UIS consists of four basic subsystems: database group subsystem, task processing subsystem, state checking and monitoring subsystem, and entire-grid-area accessible user-UIS interaction subsystem. Frameworks, functional requirements, and implementation approaches for the UIS and its subsystems are described.
