The La Plata of Spanish America occupied an important position in modern British overseas trade. The French Revolution and the following Independence Movement of the La Plata landed Britain into a dilemma: it had to ally with Spain to defeat France, and support La Plata' s independence to safeguard its trade interests. The struggles of Spain, Portugal and the La Plata in the Banda Oriental made the situation more complicated. Only by acting as a mediator among all parties could Britain safeguard its maxim interests. During the Napoleonic Wars, Britain mediated between Spain, Portugal and the La Plata, and successfully postponed the La Plata independence. After France was defeated, Britain made use of the Concert of Europe to mediate jointly, which prevented Spain from reconquering the La Plata. In 1824, Britain recognized La Plata' s independence, which also called its mediation policy to an end. The mediation policy ensured British interests both in Europe and La Plata, and also helped maintain the independence of the La Plata. It also helped lay the foundation of Britain - Argentina relationship in later times.
