The purpose of this study is to examine the influence of the features of chinese character typefaces of EMU display and control interface on driver's visual recognition efficiency. During the experiments, based on correct choice reaction time as recognition efficiency index, two-factor within-subjects experimental design was adopted to explore the effect of 10 commonly used fonts of Chinese Characters and four complexity levels of Chinese characters on driver's recognition efficiency. Based on the experimental data, the ANOVA method was used to analyze the main effect of two factors and differences between different levels of the same faetors. The result shows the impacts of the font and complexity of Chinese characters on driver's recognition efficiency are significant, while the impact of the interaction of two factors is insignificant. Among the commonly used fonts of Chinese characters, the Song typeface and Hei typeface, showing their shortest average reaction time (426 ms), are the best choices of typeface for EMU display and control interface. Following Song typeface and Boldface typeface are Huawenxingwei typeface, Fangzhengyaoti typeface, Huawenlishu typeface, Kaiti typeface, Lishu typeface and Youyuan typeface, with longer average reaction time (433 ms), which can be used as alternative font set for EMU display and control interface. The average reaction time of Fangzhengshuti typeface and Huawenxingkai typeface is the longest (546 ms), which are not fit for EMU display and control interface. The impact of complexity of Chinese characters is limited. The recognition efficiency is steadily reduced with the increase of complexity. But after the complexity of a Chinese character is beyond nine strokes, the impact of complexity tends to be gentle.
