The Remains of the Day,a fiction by Japanese-born British author Kazuo Ishiguro,is told in the first-person of an English butler named Stevens in Darlington Hall about his retrospect of his early life when he travels driving to the West Country of England. This paper aims to probe into the Stevens' ethical identity and his ethical choices from the perspective of Ethical Literary Criticism. Steven's firm insistence on his identity as a butler and strong adherence to his professional ethics make him lose family affections and love. The complexity of Stevens ' identity reveals his confrontation, his confusion, and his e imprisonment of humanity,disclosing the factors of his tragic life.
