Taichang Ritual Department of North Song Dynasty and Ritual Department are the subdivisions of Zhongshu Menxia, and the arrangement divides the right of ritual department and Taichang Temple. Besides making detailed ritual ceremony and participation into sacrifice ceremony, Taichang Ritual Department compiles a lot of ritual code. Along with the change of time, Taichang Temple restrains and recovers the right of Taichang Ritual Department gradually and the latter is abolished in the change of Yuanfeng Reign. Ritual department is established due to the respect of Emperor Zhenzong for the semiotic omen and it has a strict administrative system to pass on writ and arrange ritual activity. After the fulfillment of historical duty to deal with＂semiotic omen and complicated rituals＂of Ritual Department during the reign of Emperor Zhenzong, the duty is returned to Taichang Ritual Department. There are dissimilarities in the background, aim, lasting time, duty range, historical position between Taichang Ritual Department and Ritual Department in North Song Dynasty, but they do not govern each other though there is some functional overlapping.
